What are the Five Elements?

The Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — are five basic qualities the ancients abstracted from how the world works. They generate and restrain each other, and each maps to an organ system in the body.

In every person’s chart, the elements are distributed unevenly. The strongest or weakest element is your “tilt” — it is both your gift and your cost.

Follow it and the body flows. Fight it and the body suffers.

The World Right Now

A spring wind combs the willows and everything races to sprout. But a heavy wind snaps the trees, and too much force tears the leaves off. Wood is meant to grow — yet when it grows too fast, the roots cannot keep up.

“Wood is that which bends and straightens.”

— Shangshu · The Great Plan (Hong Fan)

What the Body Is Doing

The Liver qi runs too strong and its rising is too urgent. Blood and qi crowd upward into the head, so you get a tight, swollen head, red eyes, ringing ears, sleepless nights, and a short temper. Your body is a tree shooting wildly upward, having forgotten where its roots are planted.

What the Mind Is Doing

Excess Wood is the pattern that cannot hold anything in. The words reach your lips and you have to say them; the task is in front of you and you have to do it. Then, having said and done it all, you usually regret it — this is not impulsiveness, it is Liver qi filled to the brim, with no room left to turn around. You have no buffer, so everything comes straight out.

Where Modern Life Misaligns

The modern pattern: Excess Wood struggles most in the city, where everything must be contested, managed, and expressed. But the more you fight, the more worn down you get, and the more you manage, the more irritated you become. You are not bad-tempered — your Liver qi simply has no outlet. Nothing in your day lets that pressure drain away.

Food Direction
Sour foods that soften the Liver suit you: hawthorn, black plums, tomato, lemon. Chrysanthemum-goji tea or rose-bergamot tea is a good drink.
Do · Avoid
Do: soothe the Liver and release what is knotted, sit quietly to settle the spirit, breathe deeply. Don't: lose your temper, stay up late, drink alcohol, fight to come out on top, stare at screens for hours.
Deficient Wood
Deficient Vital Force
Liver · Gallbladder · Insufficient rising

The World Right Now

Spring arrives without wind and the buds come late. It is not that spring is missing — it is that spring is slow to reach you. Everything wants to move, and nothing can summon the energy.

“In the east wind is born, and wind gives birth to wood.”

— Huangdi Neijing · Suwen

What the Body Is Doing

Liver blood runs thin and its dispersing power is weak. You tire easily, your eyes feel dry, your nails break, your periods are scanty, and your mood sits low. Your body is a thin, withered tree — not dead, just unable to grow tall, and slow to grow at all.

What the Mind Is Doing

Deficient Wood is the pattern that runs out of steam. It is not laziness; that inner current is genuinely absent. You want to do things, but the moment you gather momentum it drains away. You want to speak, but the words reach your lips and you swallow them again.

Where Modern Life Misaligns

The modern pattern: Deficient Wood gets misread as having no drive. It is not that you do not want to — your body cannot supply the strength. Late nights, long hours sitting, crash dieting, and poor nourishment are the chief culprits. Each one quietly thins the Liver blood you are running on.

Food Direction
Foods that nourish Liver blood suit you: pork liver, black sesame, mulberry, goji berries, spinach. Goji-longan tea is a good drink.
Do · Avoid
Do: sleep early to nourish the Liver, stretch and loosen the sinews, keep green plants around you. Don't: stay up late, diet restrictively, sit still for hours, strain your eyes.
火 Fire Warmth · Drive
Excess Fire
Heart Fire in Excess
Heart · Small Intestine · Warming · Propelling

The World Right Now

High noon in summer, the sun directly overhead. Everything blazes at full strength, and under that same sun things scorch. Fire is meant to light — but burn it too fiercely and the first thing it consumes is you.

“Fire is that which flames upward.”

— Shangshu · The Great Plan (Hong Fan)

What the Body Is Doing

Heart fire blazes and the spirit has no rest. You get palpitations, sleepless nights, mouth and tongue ulcers, dark urine, and a red tip on your tongue. Your body is a machine running overclocked — it looks full of energy and it is about to break down.

What the Mind Is Doing

Excess Fire is the pattern that thinks too much. It will not stop at night and it will not stop by day. Your mind is a television that never gets switched off — you do not want to watch, and it plays anyway.

Where Modern Life Misaligns

The modern pattern: Excess Fire burns itself out from the inside. One small thing can occupy you for three days; one message can keep you turning it over all night. You are not fragile — your heart fire runs too hot, and nothing in your life gives it a chance to rest.

Food Direction
Foods that clear the Heart suit you: lotus plumule, bitter melon, mung bean, lily bulb, wheat. Lotus plumule tea or bamboo leaf tea is a good drink.
Do · Avoid
Do: settle the mind, meditate, sleep early, cut down on your phone, take a short nap after lunch. Don't: strong tea and coffee, late nights, spicy food, wild swings of joy and grief.
Deficient Fire
Deficient Heart Yang
Heart · Small Intestine · Insufficient warming

The World Right Now

When fire gives no warmth, winter settles in and stays. It is not that the sun is gone — it is that the sun never reaches your skin. The warmth is still out there in the world; you just cannot feel it.

“In the south heat is born, and heat gives birth to fire.”

— Huangdi Neijing · Suwen

What the Body Is Doing

Heart yang runs low, so blood moves sluggishly through the vessels. You feel cold, your heart flutters, your breath runs short, your face looks pale, and your hands and feet stay icy. Your body is an engine idling too low — still turning, just slowly, and never reaching full power.

What the Mind Is Doing

Deficient Fire struggles most with having no enthusiasm. Nothing stirs you; nothing is worth the argument. This is not depression — heart yang is genuinely weak. You do not have the firepower to love, to resent, or to throw yourself into anything.

Where Modern Life Misaligns

The modern pattern: Deficient Fire gets mistaken for coldness. It is not that you do not care — your body genuinely cannot produce the heat. Living indoors, sitting for long hours, moving too little, and getting too little light are the chief culprits. Each one dims the fire further.

Food Direction
Foods that warmly supplement heart yang suit you: longan, red dates, lamb, ginger, cinnamon. Longan-red date tea is a good drink.
Do · Avoid
Do: get sunlight, exercise moderately, sleep and wake early, spend time with people. Don't: sit for hours, stay up late, eat cold and raw food, stay home for days on end.

The World Right Now

The ground lies thick and substantial — but past a certain thickness it stifles. When earth abounds, water stagnates; when the soil smothers, nothing can grow. Under that heavy ground, the new cannot break through.

“Earth is that which sows and reaps.”

— Shangshu · The Great Plan (Hong Fan)

What the Body Is Doing

Spleen earth grows too strong and dampness rises inside you. You carry fat around the belly, your limbs feel heavy, your tongue is coated thick and greasy, your stools come sticky, and by afternoon you are drowsy. Your body is a sponge soaked to saturation — heavy in every direction.

What the Mind Is Doing

Excess Earth is the pattern that gets stuck in its own head. One matter cannot be set down, one person cannot be forgotten, one thought gets chewed over and over. Earth governs thought, and thought knots the qi — the more you dwell on it, the heavier it feels, and the heavier it feels, the more you dwell on it.

Where Modern Life Misaligns

The modern pattern: Excess Earth most easily puts on weight. It is not that you eat too much — you cannot transform what you eat. Long hours sitting, endless rumination, too much sweet, too much cold: every one of them adds to the earth's load. Nothing in your day moves it along.

Food Direction
Foods that strengthen the Spleen and clear dampness suit you: coix seed, adzuki bean, winter melon, dried tangerine peel, Chinese yam. Dried tangerine peel-poria tea is a good drink.
Do · Avoid
Do: exercise moderately, think and worry less, keep meals light. Don't: sit for hours, overdo sweets, eat late-night snacks, sink into worry, ruminate without end.

Spleen Earth Deficiency
Spleen · Stomach · Insufficient bearing

The World Right Now

The ground lies thin, and the first gust of wind raises dust. It is not that there are no roots — they simply do not go deep. On shallow soil, no great tree grows.

“In the center dampness is born, and dampness gives birth to earth.”

— Huangdi Neijing · Suwen

What the Body Is Doing

The Spleen and Stomach run weak and transform poorly. Your appetite fades, your belly bloats, your stools come loose, your complexion turns sallow, and you tire easily. Your body is a stretch of barren ground — whatever you plant in it, nothing is nourished.

What the Mind Is Doing

Deficient Earth is the pattern with no ground under it. There is no footing in what you say, no footing in what you do, and even standing feels like weak legs. This is not low self-esteem — the Spleen and Stomach genuinely cannot give you support.

Where Modern Life Misaligns

The modern pattern: Deficient Earth gets misread as being delicate. The truth is simply that your Spleen and Stomach are not well. Restrictive diets, binge eating, takeout, cold and raw food, eating in a rush — every one of them injures the Spleen. Your digestion never gets a calm hour to work in.

Food Direction
Foods that strengthen the Spleen and nourish the Stomach suit you: millet, Chinese yam, pumpkin, red dates, potato. Millet-yam congee is a good drink.
Do · Avoid
Do: keep meals regular, chew slowly, go easy on cold and raw food, sleep and wake early. Don't: binge, diet restrictively, live on takeout, eat cold raw fruit, work while eating.
金 Metal Descending · Gathering
Excess Metal
Lung Metal in Excess
Lung · Large Intestine · Descending · Gathering
▼
The World Right Now

The autumn wind turns bleak and the leaves scatter down. When that cutting, austere qi runs too strong, everything withers. Metal can gather things in — but draw the cord too tight and gathering turns into isolation.

“Metal is that which follows and reshapes.”

— Shangshu · The Great Plan (Hong Fan)

What the Body Is Doing

Lung metal runs too strong and its descending goes too far. Your skin dries out, your nose feels parched, you cough and wheeze, your bowels move sluggishly, and your skin cracks easily. Your body is a dry autumn leaf — touch it and it breaks.

What the Mind Is Doing

Excess Metal is the pattern that runs cold. With people and with things, distance comes naturally. It is not a fault — the Lung governs gathering, so it does not open outward easily. It is not that you do not want closeness; you do not know how to come near.

Where Modern Life Misaligns

The modern pattern: Excess Metal is loneliest in the city. Few close friends, plenty of social contact, and every encounter feels like a performance. Wearing a mask all day, working in offices, and the absence of skin-to-skin contact all deepen that loneliness. Nothing in your week breaks the glass.

Food Direction
Foods that moisten the Lungs suit you: snow fungus, lily bulb, pear, honey, apricot kernel. Snow fungus and lily bulb soup is a good drink.
Do · Avoid
Do: laugh often, talk with people, practise your breathing, take deep breaths. Don't: sink into grief, stay up late, live in dry air, eat spicy food, go for long stretches without speaking.
Deficient Metal
Deficient Lung Qi
Lung · Large Intestine · Insufficient descending
▼
The World Right Now

The autumn qi falls short and the dry heat lingers. The weather should cool and it does not; it should draw inward and it does not. The leaves that ought to fall still hang from the branches.

“In the west dryness is born, and dryness gives birth to metal.”

— Huangdi Neijing · Suwen

What the Body Is Doing

Lung qi runs low and cannot guard the surface. You catch colds easily, react to everything, get rhinitis and asthma, tire quickly, and sweat more than you should. Your body is a city with no wall around it — anything at all can walk in.

What the Mind Is Doing

Deficient Metal is the pattern that bruises easily. This is not a fragile heart — lung qi is genuinely weak, and the qi that guards your surface is too thin. The slightest stir outside finds its way in.

Where Modern Life Misaligns

The modern pattern: Deficient Metal reacts to everything. Dust mites, pollen, cold air, a shift in mood — any of them can leave you uncomfortable. Living in air-conditioning, spending little time outdoors, and wearing a mask too long are the chief culprits. Each one thins the wall a little more.

Food Direction
Foods that supplement lung qi suit you: Chinese yam, apricot kernel, ginkgo nut, lotus seed, lily bulb. Yam and lotus seed soup is a good drink.
Do · Avoid
Do: do more aerobic exercise, spend more time in nature, laugh often, keep regular hours. Don't: polluted air, staying indoors for days, excessive grief, cold raw food.

Kidney Water in Excess

The World Right Now

Winter rain falls without end and the rivers brim over. Too much water floods; too much moisture breeds cold. Water can hold things — but store them too deep and holding becomes heaviness.

“Water is that which moistens and descends.”

— Shangshu · The Great Plan (Hong Fan)

What the Body Is Doing

Kidney water runs to excess and cold dampness settles inside you. You swell with water, fear the cold, get up at night to urinate, feel your lower back and knees weak and aching, and carry a heavy lower half. Your body is a frozen river — calm on the surface, cold all the way down.

What the Mind Is Doing

Excess Water is the pattern that sinks. Feeling travels down into the depths; one matter can be thought about for a long time, one memory can be carried for years. This is not a good memory — the Kidney governs storage, and yours stores too deep.

Where Modern Life Misaligns

The modern pattern: Excess Water often finds life exhausting. You put everything into your heart and you remember everything clearly. Ten years later you can still recall one sentence somebody said. That depth of feeling is a gift, and it is also a weight you carry everywhere.

Food Direction
Foods that warm yang and move water suit you: ginger, cinnamon bark, adzuki bean, coix seed, poria. Ginger-red date tea is a good drink.
Do · Avoid
Do: warm and supplement your yang qi, sun your back, soak your feet, exercise moderately. Don't: sit for hours, eat cold and raw food, stay up late, drink excessive water, stay in cold surroundings.

Kidney Water Depletion
Kidney · Bladder · Insufficient moistening
▼
The World Right Now

Winter fails to store its water and the wells and springs run dry. It is not that winter is missing — it arrives too shallow to reach you. What should have been laid down in reserve was never stored at all.

“In the north cold is born, and cold gives birth to water.”

— Huangdi Neijing · Suwen

What the Body Is Doing

Kidney water runs low, so yin is depleted and a false fire rises. Your mouth feels dry, you cannot sleep, your ears ring, your lower back aches, your hair thins, and your mind will not settle or hold on to anything. Your body is a well close to running dry — every draw leaves a little less.

What the Mind Is Doing

Deficient Water is the pattern that thinks at night. The day is lived too full, and only at night is there room to be empty. So you sleep badly — not because you do not want to sleep, but because your mind will not switch off.

Where Modern Life Misaligns

The modern pattern: Deficient Water is the most common one in the city. Late nights, long hours sitting, coffee keeping you going, eyes strained all day, emotions burning you from the inside — every one of them drains kidney water. This is not something that only arrives with age; a person of 25 can be running low too.

Food Direction
Foods that enrich yin and supplement the Kidney suit you: black sesame, mulberry, goji berries, black beans, walnut. Black bean and goji soup, or mulberry tea, is a good drink.
Do · Avoid
Do: sleep early, rest with your eyes closed, soak your feet, cut down on late nights, reduce internal friction. Don't: stay up late, sit for hours, stare at screens, drink strong coffee and tea, eat cold and raw food.
